Fences....The Setting

Fences, a play written by August Wilson: This play takes place during the 1950's in the backyard of an urban home in an industrial city, Pittsburgh, PA. During the 1950's, some events happening politically, economically, sports, entertainment, and technology-wise were:

• The US was in the Korean War and in conflict with the Soviet Union. 
• The Cold War was going on.
•  The US ends WWII (officially) by signing a treaty with Japan.
• Elvis was a celebrity during this time.
• Schools were still desegregated.
• McDonald's was founded.
• NASA founded.
• Hula hoops were famous.
• The Sound Of Music was on Broadway.
• Color TV is (finally!) introduced. 
• President Truman and President Eisenhower inaugurated (1945 and 1953).
• Civil Rights Movement.
• First few Vaccinations and Organ Transplants.
• 1954 - Brown V. Board of Education.
• Staged Assassination attempt of President Truman by two Puerto Rican Nationalists.
